Art History – Fighting Forms by Franz Marc

by sarah on June 23, 2010

Last night Alan and I were sitting on the sofa discussing something….that somehow reminded me of a painting I had learned about in Art History.  I tried excitedly to tell Alan all about it, but my memory failed me….The image was clear in mind and I tried to describe the painting, but failed miserably, as the painting was abstract, nor could I remember the name of the painting or the name of the painter. This led to long google search, but without knowing what to search for, it was a futile attempt.  This led to a conversation where we both lamented how our brains had forgotten so much. In an attempt to make our brains remember and to learn more about art I would like to try to make a weekly post about some art piece.

To start I would like to talk about the art piece we tried to find last night.

The piece is Fighting Forms by Franz Marc. Franz Marc was apart of the German Expressionist movement. The Expressionist movement wanted to express “being alive” and the  perspective of the individual. Franz Marc himself was a co-founder of the artist group Der Blaue Reiter (the blue rider) and during WWII the Nazi party labeled Marc’s work as degenerate art and had his paintings removed from German museums.

Marc used specific colors to demonstrate different things; red represented violence, yellow represented femininity, and blue  represented masculinity.

I think that this painting might represent mankind struggling with violence. What do you all think?
