Review of Zenfolio for Photographers – An Online hosting, sharing, and ecommerce solution

Zenfolio is a fantastic online photo sharing and backup service. I first stumbled across Zenfolio while looking for an effective way to present my work online. Out of the services available I was most intrigued by the free 14 day trial offered by ZenFolio. Rather than plunk out some hard earned cash for one of the other services I have the opportunity to try Zenfolio out.

This service while similar to Smugmug, Flickr, Imagekind, and Redbubble takes the best from each service and provides it in one easy-to-use one stop shop for photographers. It also gives the ability to sell your photographic prints as well as selling your own stock images through digital downloads.

Having this ability to store and sell your prints is incredible for a photographer whether you are just starting to sell your fine art, or you are already an established commercial photographer.

There are three types of accounts available as of the time of this writing: Basic, Unlimited, and Premium. Each plan allows for the uploading of files in JPEG, TIFF, and PNG file formats. The Basic plan allows 1 Gigabyte of storage space and provides an additional 1 GB for each year you are a member.

Visual Memory Project – Stream of Consciousness

These are memories… Not necessarily my own, but ones that anyone could view and feel some sort of connection to.  Think of these like images one might see at the end of life.  A flash of images.
Ideally, these would be viewed from left to right on one side of the hallway.  18×24 prints.

Using adjustment layers in Photoshop to color correct and add contrast to your photographs

In this tutorial, I am going to teach you how to use adjustment layers in Photoshop in order to color correct and further develop your photograph.  This method will allow you to fine tune and tweak your image better than using the image > adjustments > auto contrast/color/levels.  For this tutorial I am working with a 300 DPI file at 3008 * 2000 pixels.  Scanned images from film or other media are fine as long as you can retain the resolution.

Step 1: Create your adjustment layers.

Adding Adjustment Layers. Click for Bigger.

Begin by opening your file and unlocking the layer by double clicking it.  Head over to the layers palette, create a new adjustment layer,  (half circles)  and create two curve layers, and a hue/saturation layer.  Double-click on the text “Curves 1″ and name it color adjustments.  For “Curves 2″, rename it to contrast.  Click where it says “normal” in the layers palette and select “luminosity” from the dropdown. “Motionless” by Melissa Webb

The photograph “motionless” by Melissa Webb is a fantastic image. It reminds me of a film photograph perhaps taken with velvia or some other beautiful saturated film. I love the off center focal point and the way the artist uses depth of field to her full advantage. The image is framed with subtle vignetting which makes this photograph feel both vintage and dreamlike at the same time. “Motionless” definitely has a retro air to the image and is part of why I enjoy it. The colors are both bright and muted at the same time which continues to lend to the dreamlike appearance of the photograph. The butterfly is in sharp, clear focus while the factory-like structures are blended and blurred into the background. Perhaps this photograph is challenging the idea of nature vs man. Maybe the butterfly is affirming that it has survived for thousands of years while the factory may be demolished in the next hundred years. What does this image communicate to you?
