The Best Relationship Quote EVER

28 May

Le Love 08.30.09

Once upon a time in a magazine, (the exact publication escapes me) there was an interview, which also escapes me, and in this interview I read a quote.   I think the quote epitomizes a good relationship. The person they were interviewing was discussing her relationship with her partner and said “separately we are each elements, but when we come together we are a force.” The idea being that each person in the relationship was individually strong and fully capable of standing alone but when these two individuals came together they created something even stronger. future food 209x300 The Future of Food

Ever since I watched the movie “The Future of Food” in my Environmental class, I have been trying to eat more organic foods. The film talks about genetically modified food, what they are, and what their impacts are both on humans and the environment. It was shocking to me some of the things that are going on, untested and unleashed into the environment–and what the impact on local farmers is. If a farmer chooses not to grow genetically modified crops and a bird comes and drops some GM seeds into their fields the farmer can then be sued for copyright infringement.  The suing of farmers as well as the rise of agribusiness has really put local/small farms in jeopardy.

Book Review: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

Outlander

Outlander Book Review: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

I was recently introduced to the Diana Gabaldon novel Outlander. One of my friends in Germany recommended it to me, swearing that it was one of the best of best books she has ever read and that I had to go find myself a copy. Never one to turn down the chance to find a good book, I went to the bookstore and picked it up the next week. And boy, am I glad I did! This is hands down one of the best books I’ve read! The book is around 850 pages and I read through it in two days.  I couldn’t put it down!

The book follows it heroine Claire as she accidentally finds herself transported from 1945 in the Scotland highlands to the year 1743 in Scotland. Here she meets Jamie Fraser and from there ensues adventure and love. I think this book is so good because it is not only a very beautiful and heartwarming love story but also a historical fiction novel as well as falling slightly into the science fiction genre. It is also beautifully written, all the characters are very well developed and the story never lags, I would pick the book up and then look at the clock and be shocked that several hours had past. I found myself laughing out loud in some sections and in other sections I found myself tearing up. I highly recommend this novel.

Be warned however, Outlander is the first in a series of seven books and you will not be able to stop reading until you have complete the series. I am getting towards the end of the second novel in the series entitled Dragonfly in Amber and it is just as good and addicting as the first novel.  I am already planning to purchase the rest of the novels.  You can buy the books here. Happy reading!

Arizona Politics: Vote Yes on Proposition 100

13 Apr

Vote Yes on Az Prop 100

I am currently doing an internship with the Arizona Students Association. ASA is a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that advocates on student issues such as tuition, voter access, things of that nature. We are currently working on getting people to vote yes on proposition 100. This is a proposition that would raise the AZ sales tax by 1cent. This revenue which as already been factored into the AZ budget, would go towards education, human services, and public safety.

My friend Lauren D. and I are both the media coordinators for Tempe, AZ and we spent all last week working on a video to inform people about Prop 100. I thought I would post it here and you all could take a look. Enjoy and remember if you are from Arizona vote yes on Prop 100.

Last Day in San Francisco

Our last day in San Francisco, we hopped onto a cable car, went to Fisherman’s Wharf and then Chinatown.

The San Francisco cable cars are so much fun to ride on. We caught it on Market Street, right at the turntable. they still make the cable car tracks change by hand. The car comes to the end of the line, where it gets onto a turntable, at which point two men come and push the car in a circle. When the car turns in a half circle around it stops on the tracks that go in the opposite direction. The ride itself is so much fun, albeit crowed. It its a series of ups and down on the hilly San Francisco streets. You can also see many of the traditional San Fran stops and landmarks from the car.

Once the car came to an end we ended up on Hyde Street pier. This is one of my favorite San Fran stops. It looked more like an actually pier than like Disney World, which is what I felt Fisherman’s Wharf looked like. It was was a windy, cold day, so Alan and I decided  to warm ourselves by drinking an Irish Coffee. We walked in the Buena Vista resturant, were it turns out that there is the best Irish Coffee in all of the west. It was amazing. The rest of the morning consisted of walking between the pier and eating delicious seafood.

In the late afternoon we headed to Chinatown. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a lot of time to spend there are ended up just taking a quick walk through, and taking some fun pictures.
